Mining for a Sustainable Future: A Symposium on Responsible Supply Chains

May 27, 2024, 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm

UBC Robson Square (800 Robson Street, Vancouver)

The UBC Sauder's Centre for Climate and Business Solutions and the Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining are excited to host "Mining for a Sustainable Future," a symposium on sustainable supply chains. This event provides a vital platform for exploring the complex role of mining in our society, emphasizing our profound connections to this crucial industry. We aim to unearth new perspectives on responsible mineral sourcing and discuss innovative practices that can revolutionize the sector. Join us for an insightful discussion that navigates the intricacies of the mining industry and its pivotal role in environmental sustainability and healthcare.

Katherine E. Standefer , author of "Lightning Flowers," will share her personal journey and professional insights into how mining intersects with health and the high stakes of global healthcare. Her talk will explore the tangible impacts of mining on the environment and our health, illuminating the real costs of saving lives through medical technology and the materials that power it.

Christopher Pollon, author of "Pitfall," challenges us with the question that drove his research: "If we need mining, especially to save the world from climate change, how well we do it must be everyone's business. How do we minimize the harms?" His keynote will delve into the necessity of mining for a sustainable future and the collective responsibility to ensure it's done ethically and effectively, minimizing adverse impacts while maximizing benefits.
