Indigenous Rights and Climate-Change Litigation: A Day in the Life of an Indigenous-Rights Lawyer

October 29, 2024, 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm

In Person and Zoom Options

What should the legal obligations be on businesses to ensure respect for human rights and to prevent interference with Indigenous rights, consistent with economic development within a First Nation's traditional territory? Companies doing business worldwide need to address environmental, social, and governance issues, as failure to do so carries both legal and reputational risks, and can ultimately result in a failure of significant investments devoted to resource development projects.

Sarah Hansen and Christie McLeod of Miller Thomson LLP will present an overview of various aspects of environmental and Indigenous law practice, including climate-change litigation, project assessment practice, regulatory compliance, Indigenous-led assessments,  international developments, and landmark decisions against governments for human-rights obligations.
