Collective Event
Climate+Water Research Symposium - Day One
April 9, 2025, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Water connects all living things. Ensuring resilient water systems for society and ecosystems is a global priority, challenged by both present and future impacts of a changing climate.
Join us for important conversations about the nexus of Climate+Water. All those interested in research, including faculty, students and community members, are welcome to participate in this in-person symposium.
Day One of this event (April 9, 9am - 12pm) will be hosted at UBCO in Kelowna, with the plenary presentation shared with the Vancouver campus. It is hosted in collaboration with the Watershed Ecosystem Research Excellence Cluster.
Day Two of this event (April 10, 9am - 12pm) will be hosted at the UBC Point Grey campus in Vancouver, with the plenary presentation shared with the Okanagan campus. It is hosted in collaboration with UBC Sustainability.

Plenary Discussion - Water Justice through a Changing Climate
Join our panelists Jeannette Armstrong and John Wagner to explore water justice in this time of changing climate. Bringing together their expertise in environmental ethics, Indigenous Rights and Title, water governance, political ecology and environmental anthropology, this timely discussion will unpack some of the many considerations of water justice, from upland watersheds to transnational agreements. This session will be moderated by Rheanne Kroschinsky. Note - if you are not able to attend in person but want to be notified when the recording of this session becomes available, please sign up for our newsletter. We will circulate a notification once the plenary is available on our YouTube channel.
Panel Session One: Climate, Water and Ecosystem Resilience
Ensuring resilient water systems for society and ecosystems is a global priority, challenged by both present and future impacts of a changing climate. This first panel will explore the resiliency of ecosystems by bringing together those who are investigating the present and future impacts of climate change on surface and groundwater systems. The panel will explore how those changes impact ecosystems, including forests and agroecosystems, and what opportunities exist for developing interdisciplinary Climate+Water solutions.
Panel Session Two: Watershed Governance and Management in a Changing Climate
This second panel will explore how society can engage in supporting the resiliency of ecosystems. The panel will bring together those who are actively engaged in investigating the role of watershed management, governance, and individuals in promoting resilient water systems. The panel will explore how observable and anticipated changes to climate impact our roles and will discuss what opportunities exist for developing interdisciplinary Climate+Water solutions.
