Climate Conversation: Greenwashing by the fossil fuel industry and related calls for restrictions on advertising

July 24, 2024, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm

Courtyard behind the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Location will be updated on this page in the event of inclement weather.
A fossil fuel advocacy group has been found to have spread misleading information through an ad campaign claiming that Liquefied Natural Gas would definitively “reduce global emissions” and promote sustainability in British Columbia. Ad Standards, the advertising regulatory body that made this decision, has no power to stop the ad campaign, but their decision has strengthened calls against what experts see as a rise in “greenwashing” campaigns from the fossil fuel industry. The recent Bill C-59 aims to address this greenwashing, by imposing substantial fines on any company found to be making untrue environmental claims. This has led to many oil companies taking down claims about their supposed environmental benefit. Read more: here, here and here).

Join Kathy Harrison (Political Science) and Michael Brauer (Medicine) to learn more about the climate impacts of Liquified Natural Gas in BC and globally, how the fossil fuel industry uses greenwashing to undermine climate action, and what can be done about it. No need to register, but check our website for location updates in the case of inclement weather.
