A fossil fuel advocacy group has been found to have spread misleading information through an ad campaign claiming that Liquefied Natural Gas would definitively “reduce global emissions” and promote sustainability in British Columbia. Ad Standards, the advertising regulatory body that made this decision, has no power to stop the ad campaign, but their decision has strengthened calls against what experts see as a rise in “greenwashing” campaigns from the fossil fuel industry. The recent Bill C-59 aims to address this greenwashing, by imposing substantial fines on any company found to be making untrue environmental claims.
