Collective Event
An AI Climate Conversation
November 21, 2025, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
This event is a part of our Climate Conversations, a series to provide informal opportunities to connect with colleagues on pressing climate topics, locally and globally. This event is part of Climate Emergency Week at UBC. Join events, workshops, and activities, and take transformative action for justice, people, and the planet.
AI is a quickly evolving tool that has the potential to advance climate action in mitigation, adaptation, and education. As the use of AI grows, however, so do concerns around energy and water consumption at the data centres that power the technology, as well as the potential for use of AI in advancing fossil fuel extraction.
Join faculty members Ifeoma Adaji (Computer Science) and Niyi Asiyanbi (Geography) from UBC Okanagan and Mohammad Shahrad (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Ivan Beschastnikh (Computer Science) from UBC Vancouver, to explore AI and Climate Change from its integration into possible climate solutions and the potential risks to climate associated with its use.
In this online Climate Conversation we will explore research being conducted through two of this year's Solutions Scholars projects – one assessing GHG gas emissions tracking of these online services, and another using AI as part of a broader wildfire preparedness tool for community use. Learn about these two projects below:
