Welcome to the 2024/2025 Cohort of Solutions Scholars
The 2024/2025 Solution Scholars have begun work on research projects submitted by the UBC community! From September to June, the Scholars will work on four projects (learn how projects were selected here), addressing climate solutions ranging from agroecosystems, heat wave forecasting, integration of AI models, and carbon offset accounting. The Scholars bring diverse skills and knowledge to these projects, providing a bridge within interdisciplinary research. Learn about the projects and the full list of Scholars here.
Advancing Climate Mitigation and Adaptation through Agroecological Transitions are: Talha Naheem, Caitlin Ciampaglia, Sofia Bahmutsky, Anny Wang, and Evan Eskilson. These Scholars will be working with Project Mentors Hannah Wittman (IRES/LFS), Sean Smukler (APBI/UBC Farm), and Khanh Dao Duc (Math/Computer Science).
Carbon Offsets: Climate Action or Sustainability Illusion? are: Isabella Morgante, Lucy Binfield, and Peter McArtney. They will work with the Project Mentors Hisham Zerriffi (Forest Resources Management), Gregory Paradis (Forest Resources Management), Kathryn Harrison (Political Science), and Werner Antweiler (Strategy and Business Economics Division).
Using Large Language Models to ‘chat’ with the IPCC Reports are: Pritam Dash, Viola Jasmine Provost and Victor Cardenas. Their project mentors are Milind Kandlikar (IRES, SPPGA), Sathish Gopalakrishnan (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Navin Ramankutty (IRES, SPPGA).
Enhancing Heatwave Forecasting and Public Uptake: A Collaborative Project with ECCC are: Vicky Lucas, Jing Jiang, and Emily Kaakiyo Rubooga. Their mentors are Rachel White (EOAS), Farrukh A. Chishtie (Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy), Daniel Michelson (Environment and Climate Change Canada - ECCC), and David Hudak (ECCC).
