On Monday March 2, 2026, the Climate Solutions Research Collective joined groups from across campus at the UBC Sustainability Hub’s Teaching for Impact, a faculty-focused event providing an open space to connect and advance sustainability-informed teaching across all disciplines at UBC, with a particular emphasis on climate change.
Program Coordinator Lesley Dampier joined the Open Forum session, connecting with faculty and other members of the UBC community. As an initiative focused on teaching, we asked participants questions around how climate research fits into their teaching, what resources they use to help integrate climate research into the classroom, and how they showcase current climate research.
From sharing experiences of integrating field work into labs and ‘props’ into lectures, to updating case studies regularly to keep climate examples current; from applying systems thinking to address the complexity of climate to inviting graduate students to share their research expertise, faculty are integrating current climate research into teaching in many meaningful ways.
Here are a few of the resources that were shared by colleagues to help integrate climate research into teaching:
- Campus as a Living Lab – research funding opportunities that integrate teaching and learning with on campus partners.
- SEEDS Sustainability Program - creates applied research and interdisciplinary partnerships between students, faculty, staff and community partners to advance sustainability ideas, policies, and practices and create societal impacts.
- Climate Kind Pedagogy – a resource which collects, develops and shares kindness-informed and interdisciplinary approaches to climate education.
- Centre for Teaching and Learning – a number of faculty programs are available to support curriculum development and updates.
- Open Case Studies – a project that brings together faculty and students from across departments and Faculties to co-create an interdisciplinary, open educational resource with case studies that can be used by anyone, at UBC or elsewhere.
